徐々に
解説 Definition
「徐々に」という意味の副詞で、時間をかけてゆっくりと変化や進行が起きることを表す。急激な変化ではなく、段階的かつ継続的なプロセスを強調するときに使う。「gradually（段階的に）」とほぼ同じ意味で、特に変化の過程が長期にわたる場合に使われる。

progress が「前へ進む」なので、progressively は「進行につれて少しずつ」という感覚で覚えると残りやすいです。progressive（進行的な・段階的な）に -ly が付いた形。The problem became progressively worse. のように、悪化・改善・増減が一気ではなく、時間の流れの中でじわじわ進むときによく使います。gradually と近いですが、こちらは「変化が進行の中で積み重なる」感じが少し強め。more, less, worse など比較表現と一緒に出やすい点もフックになります。

progressively は progress＋-ive＋-ly。progress はラテン語 progressus「前へ進むこと」にさかのぼり、pro-「前へ」＋ gradi「歩む」から成ります。『前進するように』が『段階を追って徐々に』へ広がり、同根語 digress, congress にも「進む」の感覚が残ります。
Progressively comes from progressive, based on progress, plus the adverb ending -ly. Progress goes back to Latin progressus, from pro- "forward" and gradi "to walk" or "step." So progressively originally carries the idea of moving forward step by step, which developed into the sense of happening gradually in stages.
