Jurassic は Jura 山脈の名に、形容詞を作る -ic が付いた語で、「ジュラ山脈に関する」が原義です。Jura や sub-Jurassic などとつながり、最初にその地層で特徴づけられた時代だったため、地名がそのまま地質時代名になりました。
Jurassic comes from Jura, the name of the Jura Mountains, plus the adjective-forming suffix -ic. It originally meant "related to the Jura Mountains." Because rocks from that area helped identify this geologic period, the place name became the name of the period itself.
