downside は down「下へ」＋ side「側面」の複合語で、もとは「下側・裏側」という物理的意味でした。そこから比喩で「物事の悪い面」に広がり、upside や hillside と見比べると、「側面のうち下向きの面」から「欠点」になった流れが見えます。
Downside is formed from down and side in English. It first referred to the lower side of something in a physical sense. Later, by metaphor, it came to mean the negative side of a situation or choice.
