browsing は browse から来た語で、browse は古フランス語由来の「若枝・芽を食べる」という語感をもち、動物が少しずつついばむ動きが出発点です。browser や browse も同根で、情報を「深く読む」より「葉をつまむように拾い見る」と考えると、閲覧のニュアンスが見えます。
Browsing comes from browse, a word that goes back through Old French to a sense of nibbling young shoots or buds. It first described the way animals feed little by little.
