browse は古フランス語 broster「芽を出す・若枝を食べる」に由来し、奥にはゲルマン系の「芽・若枝」を表す語があります。もとは鹿や家畜が葉や若枝を少しずつ食べることだったため、あちこちを拾って見る感覚から「拾い読みする」「閲覧する」へ広がりました。関連語は browser, browsing。
Browse comes from Old French broster, linked to the idea of budding shoots or eating young branches, with deeper Germanic roots. It first described animals feeding little by little on leaves and twigs. That image of moving lightly from one thing to another later gave English the sense of looking through books, goods, or websites without focusing on one item.
