ラテン語 elector（選ぶ人）から。e-（外へ）+ legere（選ぶ）が語根で、「選び出す」が原義。関連語に elect（選出する）、eligible（適格な）がある。-al は形容詞化接尾辞で、「選挙に関する」という意味になった。
Electoral comes from Latin elector, "chooser," based on eligere, "to pick out" or "choose." The root combines e- "out" with legere "gather, choose," so the original idea is selecting someone from others. It is closely related to elect, election, and eligible.
