ember の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ember は古英語 æmerge にさかのぼり、古ノルド語 eimyrja の影響も受けたゲルマン系の古い語です。語の奥には『灰』と『燃える』を表す要素が重なっており、静かに赤く燃え残る感じがそのまま残っています。今のつづりの b は後から入り込んだ字です。
"Ember" is a very old Germanic word from Old English, related to Old Norse forms such as "eimyrja." Its history seems to combine ideas of ash and slow burning, which fits the image of a fire's glowing remains. The modern spelling later gained a "b," which was not part of the oldest form.
