残り火
解説 Definition
残り火とは、火が完全には消えていない状態で、かすかに燃え続けている炭や灰を指します。焚き火やかまどが消えかけているときに見られます。比喩的には、過去の感情や関係がまだ完全には消滅していない状態を表します。
A small piece of wood or coal that is still glowing after a fire has mostly gone out. Embers can stay hot for a long time and may start a fire again. The word is most often used when talking about fires, campfires, or burning remains.

ember は古英語 æmerge にさかのぼり、古ノルド語 eimyrja の影響も受けたゲルマン系の古い語です。語の奥には『灰』と『燃える』を表す要素が重なっており、静かに赤く燃え残る感じがそのまま残っています。今のつづりの b は後から入り込んだ字です。
"Ember" is a very old Germanic word from Old English, related to Old Norse forms such as "eimyrja." Its history seems to combine ideas of ash and slow burning, which fits the image of a fire's glowing remains. The modern spelling later gained a "b," which was not part of the oldest form.
