脳の疾患や損傷によって起こる異常な機能状態。脳炎やウイルス感染など様々な原因で発生する。
Encephalopathy is a medical term for a condition that affects the brain and changes how it works. It can be caused by many different problems, so the word is broad and does not name one specific disease.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
長い医学語ですが、後ろの -pathy を neuropathy, cardiomyopathy などの「〜障害・病変」の型として覚えると一気に楽です。encephalo- は encephalitis や electroencephalogram でも見かける「脳」のまとまり。つまり「脳の機能障害全般」が基本像。-itis は炎症なので encephalitis は脳炎、encephalopathy は原因を広く含む脳症、と対比すると混同しにくいです。hepatic encephalopathy などの形でもよく出ます。
