seltzerはドイツの鉱泉地Selters（ゼルタース）に由来し、もとは“Seltersの水”という地名由来の呼び名でした。ドイツ語のSelterswasserが近い形で、名産地の炭酸入り鉱泉が、そのまま炭酸水一般の名になったと考えると意味がつながります。
