ラテン語 intibus を経て、ギリシャ語 entybon（チコリの一種）に遡る。中世ラテン語 endivia からフランス語 endive を経て英語に入った。関連語: chicory（同じキク科の近縁種）。地中海沿岸原産の野菜で、古代から栽培されていた歴史が名前の古さに表れている。
Endive entered English through French endive, from Medieval Latin endivia. It goes back further to Latin and probably to Greek entybon, the name of a leafy plant. The word has kept its link with an old Mediterranean crop, and it is historically close to names such as chicory.
