Microcode is a very low-level set of instructions inside a computer processor that controls how machine-level operations are carried out. It works between the hardware and higher-level instructions. The word is mainly used in computer engineering and system design.

microcode の語源・成り立ち Etymology
microcode はギリシャ語 micro-「小さい」と、ラテン語 codex「木の板の書物」に由来する code から。大きな命令を内部で支える「もっと小さな記述」という発想で、decode や codify も同じ語源を引く。
