硬化剤と反応して強固に固まる合成樹脂。接着剤や塗料、電子部品の封止材に使われる。

epoxy は日本語の「エポキシ接着剤」と直結させ、二つの液を混ぜると化学反応で硬くなり、割れ目を強固に埋める樹脂という場面で覚える。普通の glue より、強度・耐水性・耐久性を求める接着や床の塗装に使われるイメージが重要。two-part epoxy「二液型エポキシ」、a strong waterproof bond「強い防水接着」、coat the floor with epoxy「床をエポキシで覆う」を一組にする。製品名ではなく、硬化剤と反応して固まる合成樹脂を指す。

epoxy の語源・成り立ち Etymology
化学用語 epoxy は epi- と oxy- を組み合わせて1930年代に作られ、酸素原子を含む三員環構造を表しました。そこから、その構造を持つ化合物を原料とする epoxy resin「エポキシ樹脂」の略称として定着しました。
The chemical term was formed by combining epi- and oxy- to refer to a three-membered ring containing oxygen. It later became a shortened name for epoxy resin made from compounds with this structure.
