化学語 ester はドイツ語 Ester に由来し、Essig（酢）と Äther（エーテル）が縮まってできた語とされます。初期には有機酸由来でエーテルに似た化合物と考えられたため、この名が付きました。関連語は ether, acetic.

It was coined by the chemist Leopold Gmelin as a shortened blend associated with German Essigäther, literally “acetic ether,” using elements connected with Essig, “vinegar,” and Äther, “ether.” The name reflected early terminology for compounds derived from organic acids and alcohols.
