Excommunication is the act of officially removing someone from membership in a religious community, especially a church. It is used when a person is judged to have seriously broken important religious rules. The word is mainly used in formal or historical contexts.

excommunicationは後期ラテン語excommunicatioに由来し、ex-「外へ」+ communicare「共有する・交わる」+ -tionから成ります。commonやcommunicateと同じcommun-を持ち、「共同体の交わりの外へ出すこと」から「破門」になった語です。
Excommunication comes from Late Latin excommunicatio. It is built from ex- "out of" and communicare "to share, make common," the same root seen in communicate and common. The idea was putting someone outside shared community life, which later became the church sense of formal removal from fellowship.
