example を知っていれば核はつかみやすい語です。まず exempl- を見たら「例」の仲間だと反応すると覚えやすい。さらに語尾 -ify は classify, simplify などと同じく「〜の形にする・はっきり示す」の感覚。exemplify は単に例を挙げるより、「その例が抽象的な原則や特徴を具体的に体現している」というニュアンスです。illustrate が説明寄り、demonstrate が証明寄りなら、exemplify は「好例として示す」。be exemplified by や This case exemplifies ... の形で覚えると定着します。

exemplify は中世ラテン語 exemplificare に由来し、核にはラテン語 exemplum「手本・例」があります。もともと「例を示して分からせる」感覚なので、「例証する」と「模範を体現する」が同居する語です。関連語は example、exemplar。
Exemplify comes from Medieval Latin exemplificare, based on Latin exemplum, meaning "example" or "model." The original idea was to explain something by giving an example. From that, English also developed the sense of showing a quality clearly in one's own form or behavior.
