An exemplar is a person or thing that is seen as an excellent example of a type or quality. It is often used in formal or academic contexts to point to a model that others can learn from.

exemplar は中英語を経て入った語で、語源はラテン語 exemplar「見本・型」です。さらに exemplum「取り出された例」にさかのぼり、ex-「外へ」+ emere「取る」という発想から、「取り出して示すもの」だから「見本」になるわけです。関連語は example, exemplary。
