paragon はフランス語経由でイタリア語 paragone「試金石」に由来し、さらにギリシャ語 para-「そばで」+ akone「砥石」へつながります。金の真価を測る石だったため、「比べて優秀さを示す手本」になりました。acute と acumen も同じ「鋭さ」の語根です。
"Paragon" came into English through French from Italian paragone, which originally meant a touchstone used to test gold. The word is linked to the idea of comparison and judging true quality.
