flake は古ノルド語 flak にさかのぼる語で、「平たい一片・薄くはがれたもの」が核です。そこから flaky「崩れやすい、不安定な」が生まれ、口語では性格や行動が安定せず、約束を守らない人を flake と呼ぶようになりました。
Flake comes from Old Norse flak, which referred to a flat piece or layer. The central idea was something thin and spread out, or something that has come off in a small flat piece.
