floss は古フランス語 floche「絹の房・けば」を経て、ラテン系の floccus「羊毛の房」にさかのぼる語です。ふわっとした細い繊維の感覚が核で、そこから歯の間を通す糸になりました。flocculent や deflocculate も同じ「房」の仲間です。
Floss came through Old French floche, meaning a tuft or soft loose fiber, and goes back to Latin floccus, "a tuft of wool." The central image is something light, soft, and thread-like.
