Foundering means sinking, collapsing, or failing after losing strength, control, or progress. It can describe a ship in water, but it is also often used for plans, businesses, or efforts that are struggling badly and may not succeed.

foundering の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 fondrer（沈む・崩れる）から来ており、ラテン語 fundus（底）が語源。「底に沈む」が原義で、船の沈没や計画の頓挫に使われる。同根のfoundation（基礎）も「底」から派生しており、底つながりで対照的な意味を持つ。関連語: foundation（基礎）、profound（深い）。
Foundering comes from founder, which in this sense came through Old French fondrer, "to sink" or "collapse," from Latin fundus, meaning "bottom." The original image is of something going down to the bottom. That later widened from ships sinking to plans or efforts failing completely; compare foundation and profound, which share the same Latin root.
