古フランス語のfranc（自由な）が語源です。1360年に捕虜王を「解放」するため鋳造された金貨に名付けられ、ゲルマン語で自由民のフランク族に由来します。税免除で自由に流通できたため通貨名として定着し、関連語に本音のfrankがあります。
