Think of a gag as one small device used to produce laughter in a comedy. It may be a spoken joke, a physical action, or a visual trick, so it is broader than something merely told in words. Common combinations include visual gag, running gag, and use the same gag. A running gag is repeated throughout a performance, while a visual gag works mainly through what the audience sees. This sense is related historically to the image of having one’s breath stopped, as when laughing extremely hard.

gag の語源・成り立ち Etymology
中英語gaggenから派生し、「息が詰まる・吐き気を催す」が原義。喉を塞ぐ猿ぐつわの意味から、舞台で観客の息を詰まらせるほど笑わせる即興ネタへ転じた。関連語: gag reflex(嘔吐反射)。口を塞ぐ→笑いで息ができないという比喩的な意味変化が面白い。
Gag is related to Middle English gaggen, referring to choking or stopping up the mouth or throat. The noun consequently came to denote something placed in the mouth to prevent speech. Its theatrical sense developed for an improvised comic line or piece of stage business, and it later broadened to mean any short joke or comic device. The older physical sense remains visible in expressions such as gag reflex.
