語源は諸説あり、18世紀英語で「回転するもの」を意味した gig（独楽・軽馬車）に遡る可能性がある。ジャズ時代に「一夜限りの演奏仕事」の意味で定着した。関連語に giggle（くすくす笑う）は別語源だが、現代では gig economy（ギグ経済）として単発仕事全般を指す。
