Hungary はラテン語 Hungaria に由来し、テュルク系民族名 Onogur（「十本の矢＝十部族」）が語源とされる。on（十）+ ogur（矢・部族）の合成語で、部族連合を表した。関連語：Hungarian（ハンガリー人）。矢で部族を数えた遊牧民の伝統が国名に残っている。
Hungary comes from Medieval Latin Hungaria, probably based on the Turkic tribal name Onogur. That name is often explained as meaning "ten tribes" or "ten arrows," from elements meaning "ten" and a tribal unit. Over time, the name of a tribal group became the name of the country, and Hungarian is from the same source.
