side job の語源・成り立ち Etymology
sideは古英語sīde（広い面、横）、jobは16世紀の英語で「ひとまとまりの仕事」を意味する語源不詳の語。sideには「本筋の横にある＝副次的な」という意味があり、sidebar（補足記事）やsideline（副業・サイドライン）も同じ発想。本業の「横」でやる仕事だから副業。
Side comes from Old English sīde, meaning a side or broad surface, while job appeared in English in the 16th century and has an uncertain origin. Side often came to mean something secondary or not central, as in sideline or sidebar. So a side job is work done at the side of a person's main work.
