Etymology
Geordie developed from a northern English and Scottish familiar form of the personal name George. George ultimately comes from Greek geōrgos, “farmer,” formed from gē, “earth,” and ergon, “work.” How the nickname became attached specifically to people around Newcastle has been explained in several ways, and no single account is certain. By the nineteenth century, Geordie was established as a regional label and later also named the local speech variety.
