覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
Georgia(ジョージア)に、出身・所属を表す接尾辞 -an が付いた形と捉える。言語名なら speak Georgian、文字なら the Georgian alphabet と結び付ける。国・人・文化を表す形容詞にもなるため、文脈で「ジョージア語」か「ジョージアの」を判断し、固有名詞として語頭を大文字にする。
Connect Georgian directly with Georgia plus the ending -an, which often marks origin or association. In language contexts, learn it through phrases such as speak Georgian, written Georgian, and the Georgian alphabet. The same word can also modify nouns, as in Georgian wine or Georgian architecture, so use the surrounding noun to decide whether it refers to the language or to something from Georgia. As the name of a language or nationality, Georgian begins with a capital letter.

georgian の語源・成り立ち Etymology
Georgianは国名Georgia(グルジア/ジョージア)に由来し、さらに聖ゲオルギウス(St. George)に遡る。ギリシャ語georgos(農夫)が語源で、ge(地)+ergon(仕事)の合成語。関連語:geography(地理学)、energy(エネルギー)。「大地を耕す人」が聖人名を経て国名になった。
Georgian was formed in English from Georgia and the suffix -an, which indicates origin or association. The European name Georgia was historically linked in popular tradition with Saint George, whose name ultimately comes from Greek geōrgos, “farmer,” built from elements meaning “earth” and “work.” That traditional association does not by itself establish the original source of the country’s name, whose history is more complex.
