A saint is a person who is recognized as especially holy or morally good, especially in Christianity. The word is often used in religion and history. In informal use, it can also describe someone who is extremely kind and patient.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず "holy" や "sacred" と同じ「聖なる」仲間として覚えると定着しやすい語です。人を表すので、saint = 「聖なる人物」。普通の good person より強く、宗教的・道徳的に特別に尊ばれる人を指します。名前の前で St. と略される形（St. Paul など）もよく見ます。反対側に sinner を置くと輪郭がはっきりします。また "He is no saint." は「聖人君子ではない」の定番表現です。

saint は古フランス語 saint を経て、ラテン語 sanctus「聖なる・清められた」にさかのぼります。語幹 sanct- は「神聖にする」感覚を持ち、sanctify や sanctuary も同根です。もとは「聖なる人」なので、聖人の意味にそのままつながります。
