topical はギリシャ語 topos「場所」がラテン語・フランス語を経て英語 topic となり、-al「〜に関する」が付いた語です。「議論の置き場所」から「話題・論点」の意が生まれ、そこから「時事的な・話題の」と納得できます。関連語に topic、utopia があります。
Topical comes from `topic` plus `-al`. `Topic` goes back to Greek `topos`, meaning "place," and first referred to a place or heading for argument or discussion. From that sense, the word developed into "about a subject" and then "connected with current issues or popular subjects"; `utopia` shares the same Greek root.
