解説 Definition
alphabet は、言語で使う文字を決まった順番に並べたアルファベットという意味です。英語では A から Z までの文字全体を指すことが多いです。日本語の「アルファベット」とほぼ同じですが、英字以外の文字体系にも使われることがあります。
An alphabet is an ordered set of letters used to represent the sounds of a language in writing. In everyday English, the alphabet often means the twenty-six letters from A to Z, but the word also applies to other letter-based writing systems.

ギリシャ語の最初の2文字 alpha（α）と beta（β）を組み合わせた語。これらは元々フェニキア文字の aleph（牛）と beth（家）に由来する。alphabetical（アルファベット順の）も同根。文字体系全体を最初の2文字で代表させた命名法。
Alphabet comes through Late Latin alphabetum from Greek alphabētos, a combination of alpha and beta, the names of the first two Greek letters. Those names ultimately reflect the Phoenician letter names aleph, associated with “ox,” and beth, associated with “house.” Naming a complete writing system after its opening characters follows the same principle seen in the term ABCs. Alphabetical was later formed from alphabet.
