蒸留酒に大量のミキサー（通常はソーダ水またはジンジャーエール）を混ぜて作るカクテルです。冷たく爽快感のあるアルコール飲料です。

highball は19世紀アメリカ英語で、high「高い」＋ ball からなる語です。酒の語義は「背の高いグラスで出す酒」から生まれたとされ、だからハイボールは背高グラスで飲む軽い混成酒というイメージにぴたりと重なります。関連語は highball glass, highballing。
Highball appeared in American English in the 19th century as a compound of high and ball.
