Highlander was formed in English from highland and the person-forming suffix -er. Highland itself combines high, from Old English hēah, with land, from Old English land. The literal sense is therefore “a person of the high land.” The word became particularly associated with inhabitants of the Scottish Highlands and stands in a transparent contrast with lowlander.
