islander は island + -er「〜の人」。island は古英語 igland にさかのぼり、語幹は land「土地」で、inland や mainland と同根。綴りの s は後に isle の影響で加わった字なので、発音しないのも腑に落ちる。
Islander is built from island + -er, meaning "a person from." Island goes back to Old English igland, whose main root is land. The silent s was added later under the influence of isle, so the spelling changed even though the sound did not.
