hike は19世紀の英語 hike からで、語源ははっきりしないが「ぐいと引く」「ずんずん進む」といった動きの語感をもつ。そこから名詞で「徒歩旅行・ハイキング」になった。hiker や hiking にも同じ、足を前へ運び続ける感覚が残る。
