英語の方言 hike（勢いよく歩く）が語源で、19世紀初頭に「長距離を歩く」意味で定着した。ゲルマン語系の*hik-（動く）に関連するとされる。日本語のハイキングは英語からの借用語で、関連語: hitchhike（ヒッチハイク）。
“Hiking” is the gerund or present-participle form of “hike,” made by dropping the final e and adding -ing. “Hike” appeared in English dialect and informal use before becoming established in the nineteenth century with the sense of walking vigorously or traveling a long distance on foot.
