解説 Definition
「go on」は、話や作業を中断せずに続ける、会議や出来事がしばらく続く、何かが起こる・進行している、などの意味で使われる句動詞です。日常会話では "What's going on?" の形で「何が起きているの？」という意味でも非常によく使われます。
Go on means to continue or to keep happening. It is often used for actions, stories, events, or situations. It can also mean that something is taking place at that time.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
go と on をそのまま「先へ進み続ける」とつなげると核のイメージをつかみやすい。まずは「続く・続ける」を中心に覚えると整理しやすく、The meeting went on. / Go on speaking. のように使える。そこから意味が広がって「出来事が進行する・起こる」にもなり、What's going on? で「何が起こっているの？」。continue より会話的で、go on doing の形や go on and on「延々と続く」も一緒に押さえると定着しやすい。
