行いきました

解説 Definition

went は go(行く)の過去形です。どこかへ行ったという過去の行動を表す基本的な語です。

Went is the past-tense form of go. It indicates that a person or thing moved to another place, traveled somewhere, or left for a destination at a time in the past.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

went は go「行く」の過去形ですが、goed とはしません。もとは別動詞 wend の過去形が go の過去形として取り込まれた補充形なので、綴りが大きく異なります。go today に対して went yesterday と時を対比し、went to school、went home のような基本表現で覚えましょう。発音は /went/ です。

Learn went as a complete partner of go rather than trying to build it with -ed: go is present, and went is past. English uses this unusual pair because went originally belonged to another verb, wend, and later replaced the older past form of go. Practice it through time contrasts: “I go to school every day” but “I went to school yesterday.” Common patterns include went to the park, went home, and went by bus. Notice that home usually follows went without to. Went is pronounced /went/, rhyming with sent.

例文

I went to school.

私は学校へ行きました。

They went to the park.

彼らは公園へ行きました。

We went home after lunch.

私たちは昼食のあと家に帰りました。

went の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 wendan(向きを変える、行く)の過去形に由来。go の過去形として補充形(元は別の動詞)が定着した珍しい例。関連語: wend(進む)、wind(曲がる)。「方向を転じて進む」が原義で、go の不規則変化の理由はこの語源の違いにある。

Went originated as the past tense of wend, an Old English verb meaning “to turn” or “to proceed.” During the Middle English period, it increasingly served as the past tense of go and eventually displaced go’s older past form. This makes go–went a suppletive pair: its present and past forms come from historically different verbs. The surviving verb wend now appears mainly in the expression wend one’s way.
