解説 Definition
ある時点・期間の終わりを示し、「〜まで」を表す語。動作や状態がその時まで続くことを示すのが基本で、時間表現と特によく結び付く。前置詞として名詞句を、接続詞的に節を導いて「〜するまで」の形でも非常によく使われる。
Used to show that something continues up to a particular time, point, or condition. It can describe time, distance, or the end of a process. It often suggests that the situation changes after that point.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
until は、時間の線を引いて「その終点に届く直前まで何かが続く」語として覚えると定着しやすい。stay, wait, last など「続く・待つ」動詞と相性がよく、wait until Friday, stay here until noon をかたまりで覚えると強い。似た by は「その時点までに完了」、until は「その時点まで継続」。till はくだけた短い形でほぼ同じ意味。not ... until で「〜して初めて／〜までは…ない」も頻出。
Picture `until` as a line of time that continues up to an end point. It often appears with verbs of continuing or waiting, like `wait until Friday` or `stay here until noon`. A helpful contrast is `by`: `by` means finished before that time, but `until` means continuing up to that time. Also remember `not ... until`, a very common pattern in English.
