ヒンドゥー教
解説 Definition
hinduism は「ヒンドゥー教」という意味で、主にインドで発展した宗教・思想の伝統を指します。日本語のカタカナ語「ヒンドゥー教」とほぼ同じ意味で使われますが、英語では宗教名として文中でも大文字で Hinduism と書くのが一般的です。
Hinduism is a diverse religious and philosophical tradition that developed in South Asia, particularly India. It includes many schools, beliefs, practices, sacred texts, deities, festivals, and forms of worship rather than a single uniform doctrine.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
Hindu「ヒンドゥー教徒・ヒンドゥーの」に、思想・宗教体系を表す -ism が付いた形と捉える。India、Indus と歴史的に同じ Sindhu にさかのぼる点も手掛かりになる。宗教名なので通常 Hinduism と大文字で書き、traditions、festivals、beliefs などと結び付けて覚える。
Break Hinduism into Hindu and -ism. The suffix -ism often names a system of thought, belief, or religion, so the structure points directly to the religious traditions associated with Hindus. Hindu, India, and Indus are historically connected through the ancient name Sindhu, giving you a factual link among the words. In standard English, capitalize the name of the religion: Hinduism. Useful combinations include Hinduism’s traditions, Hindu beliefs, Hindu festivals, and a book about Hinduism.

hinduism の語源・成り立ち Etymology
hinduism は Hindu+-ism「主義・宗教」。Hindu はペルシャ語 Hindū に由来し、さらにサンスクリット語 Sindhu「インダス川」へさかのぼり、関連語に India, Indus がある。もとはインダス川の向こうの人々を指し、そこからその人々の信仰全体で「ヒンドゥー教」になった。
Hinduism was formed in English from Hindu plus the suffix -ism, which denotes a system, doctrine, or practice. Hindu came through Persian Hindū and ultimately relates to Sanskrit Sindhu, the name of the Indus River and its surrounding region. The geographical designation gradually came to identify peoples and religious traditions of the Indian subcontinent. India and Indus belong to the same broad historical chain of names.
