Connect the adjective Hindu with the religion called Hinduism. In the examples, Hindu does not name an individual; it classifies a temple, festival, or tradition as belonging or relating to Hinduism. Learn it through common combinations such as Hindu temple, Hindu festival, Hindu belief, and Hindu tradition. This pattern makes the grammatical role clear: Hindu comes before a noun and tells you what religious tradition it is associated with. Although the entry is shown in lowercase, standard English normally capitalizes it as Hindu because it is derived from a proper name.

hindu の語源・成り立ち Etymology
サンスクリット語 sindhu(大河、特にインダス川)がペルシャ語で hindu となり、インダス川流域の人々や文化を指す語に。ギリシャ語 Indos、ラテン語 Indus も同根。関連語: India(インド)、Indus(インダス川)。「大河の民」が宗教名へと発展した。
Hindu ultimately developed from Sanskrit Sindhu, the name of the Indus River and a word for a large river. In Old Persian, the initial sound changed, producing a form like Hindu that referred to the lands and peoples beyond the Indus. The geographical and cultural label later acquired its modern religious sense. Indus and India are historically related forms, although their spellings reached English through different linguistic routes.
