フランス語 journal（日刊の、日記）に -ism（主義・活動）を付けた語。journal はラテン語 diurnalis（日々の）から来ており、diurnus（日中の）→ dies（日）が語根。「日々の記録を届ける活動」が原義。関連語: journal（日誌）、diary（日記、同じ dies が語源）。
