slug は中英語 slugge に由来し、さらに古ノルド語や低地ドイツ語に連なる北海ゲルマン系の語と考えられます。sluggard や sluggish も近い語族で、「のろのろしたもの」という感触がそのままナメクジの名になったと考えると覚えやすい語です。
Slug comes from Middle English slugge and is thought to belong to a North Sea Germanic group of words, with links to Old Norse and Low German. It is closely related in feeling to sluggard and sluggish. The basic idea was something slow or lazy, which then became the name of the slow-moving animal.
