解説 Definition
「migraine」は、片頭痛のことで、頭の片側に強い拍動性の痛みが生じる神経学的な状態です。吐き気、嘔吐、光や音への過敏性を伴うことが多く、数時間から数日間続くことがあります。ストレス、睡眠不足、特定の食べ物などが引き金になることが知られています。

migraine はフランス語 migraine を経て、後期ラテン語 hemicrania、さらにギリシャ語 hēmikrania「頭の半分の痛み」にさかのぼります。hemi-「半分」+ cranium 系の「頭」なので、片側に起こりやすい頭痛という語源がそのまま片頭痛の意味を説明しています。関連語は hemisphere, cranium。
