hookah はヒンディー語 huqqa を経て英語に入り、さらに源流はアラビア語 huqqa『小箱・容器』にさかのぼります。もとは煙を通す水容器の名で、器の名が道具全体を指すようになった語です。関連形に huqqa、huqqah があり、形から意味が広がったとわかります。
Hookah came into English from Hindi huqqa, with an older source in Arabic huqqa, meaning a small box or container. At first, the name referred to the water container used in the smoking device. Later, the name of that part came to mean the whole instrument.
