Ikat is a method of making patterned cloth by dyeing the threads before they are woven. The word can also mean the fabric produced in this way, and it is common in discussions of traditional textiles and fashion.

ikat はマレー語・インドネシア語の ikat「結ぶ、縛る」に由来し、染める前に糸を縛って防染する技法名になった語です。mengikat「結びつける」や pengikat「結束具」と同根で、模様がまず“糸を結ぶ”操作から生まれると分かると意味が見えます。
Ikat comes from Malay and Indonesian ikat, meaning "to tie" or "bind." The word was used for a textile method in which threads are tied before dyeing to block the color in certain places. Because the pattern begins with tying the threads, the name of that action became the name of the fabric technique.
