inch は古英語 ynce を経て、ラテン語 uncia「12分の1」にさかのぼります。uncia はもともと「全体の一部」の感覚で、1フィートの12分の1という長さ名になりました。関連語に ounce, uncial があり、「12分の1」の発想でつながります。
Inch came through Old English ynce from Latin uncia, meaning a twelfth part. Because the Roman uncia represented one twelfth of a larger whole, the term became suitable for a length equal to one twelfth of a foot.
