ラテン語 uncia（12分の1）が古フランス語 unce を経て英語に入った。古代ローマの重量・長さの単位で「全体の12分の1」が原義。関連語: inch（インチ、同じ uncia から）、unit（単位）。1ポンド=12オンスだった歴史が語源と一致する。
Ounce entered English through Old French unce from Latin uncia, meaning one twelfth or a twelfth part. In ancient Rome, uncia named several units based on division into twelve parts, including a unit of weight. The same Latin word also lies behind inch. Although the historical Roman relationship involved twelfths, the common modern avoirdupois ounce is one sixteenth of a pound.
