覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
inchoately は inchoate「形になり始めたが、まだ未完成の」+ -ly と捉え、「芽は出たものの輪郭が定まらない状態で」と覚えると定着しやすい。先頭の in- を単純な否定と解釈しないことが大切。vaguely は単に「ぼんやり」、inchoately は考え・感情・運動などが発生の初期にあり、まだ整理も言語化もされていない感じを帯びる。an idea existed inchoately in his mind のように、頭の中で霧のような発想が集まり始める場面に固定するとよい。
Think of inchoate plus the adverb ending -ly: something has started to form, but its outline is still unclear. Do not treat the opening in- as an ordinary negative prefix; picture an idea only beginning to gather like shapes in fog.

inchoately の語源・成り立ち Etymology
inchoate「未完成の、形成され始めた」に副詞接尾辞 -ly を付けた語です。inchoate はラテン語 incohāre「始める」に由来します。現代の in- は否定の接頭辞に見えますが、この語では単純に「〜でない」と分解できません。
It is formed from inchoate, meaning “just beginning to form or incomplete,” and the suffix -ly. Inchoate comes from Latin incohāre, meaning “to begin,” so its in- cannot simply be analyzed as meaning “not.”
