tangerine はモロッコの港町 Tangier から来た語で、そこ経由でヨーロッパへ入った柑橘を指したのが始まりです。Tanger や Tangier orange と同じ地名由来で、味や色ではなく「どこから来た実か」が名になった語です。
Tangerine is named after Tangier, the port city in Morocco. The fruit was associated with that place because it was shipped from there into Europe. So the word began as a place-based name, and only later became the usual English name for the fruit.
