satsuma は日本の地名「薩摩」に由来し、そこから西洋へ輸出されたミカン名が英語化した語です。接頭辞分解はない地名語源ですが、Satsuma ware や Satsuma Rebellion と並べると、「土地の名がその土地の名物を表す」流れが見えて意味が腑に落ちます。
Satsuma comes from Satsuma, the name of a former region of Japan. The word entered English through trade, because mandarins from that area were exported abroad.
